The fame and popularity of Birbal had spread far and wide. He was known for finding solutions for the most difficult problems. Early, one morning, a weeping Brahmin came running to Birbal’s house.

“Help me! Oh, please, you’ve got to help me. What shall I do? What shall I do? I am ruined,” he cried. Birbal calmed him down, “Don’t worry. We will find a way out. Come on, tell me what happened.” The Brahmin explained, “My dear sir, I have been robbed of all my gold.

It was kept in a safe in my bedroom. There is no sign of anybody breaking into the house. And the doors were locked from the inside. The windows are also intact and it is grilled.”

“Did you have any guests yesterday?” “No, there were no guests. Only my four servants were with me in the house the whole day. My family has gone out to attend a marriage, they will return only tomorrow.

I don’t know what my wife will say. Boo hoo.” “Do you suspect any of your servants?” “No, I don’t. They have been working for me since many years.” “Hmm.. bring your servants to me as soon as possible.”

When the servants were brought in, he said, “This is the last chance i would be giving you. If the culprit owns up, he would be forgiven and set free.”

All the servants said, “No sir, we have not taken the gold.” Birbal went into his room and came with four sticks in his hand. He told them, “These sticks have magical powers in them.

My grandfather had got it from the Himalayas. If they are touched by a thief, these sticks grow longer, by an inch.” After giving each of the servants a stick, he continued, “Keep it safely for the night and bring it to me in the morning.

The one whose stick grows an inch is the thief.” The next morning, the servants assembled at Birbal’s house. Birbal compared the sticks by keeping it side by side.

He found that one was shorter by an inch than the others. He caught hold of the servant who had given him that stick and told the Brahmin, “This is the thief.” It did not take long for the servant to fall at the Brahmin’s feet, “Forgive me my lord. Oh! Please forgive me. The gold is safe. I will return it to you.

The Brahmin ordered the servant to return the gold and sent him out. He asked Birbal later, “How did you find the thief? Birbal explained, “It was easy, the foolish servant believed me when I said the stick would grow.

He cut the stick by an inch so that it would become the same size as the other sticks, in case it grows.” The Brahmin thanked Birbal and rewarded him handsomely.
