The Licking Funny Tale Of Birbal in English
Akbar and Birbal were in the habit of teasing one another. They never missed a chance. And, if they did not get a chance, they created one. That was a day when there was no chance to tease. Akbar was disappointed. He thought his day would be incomplete without teasing Birbal. So he started to spin a story.
Akbar started to laugh aloud suddenly. His courtiers were astonished. “Your Highness, may we know what makes
you laugh so suddenly?”, they asked in chorus. “I will tell you,” said Akbar and he continued, “Yesterday I had a funny dream. Birbal and I were having astroll on the banks of Yamuna.
Suddenly we were swept away by the river in different directions. After sometime we drifted into two corners, Birbal in one and myself in the other. There lies the joke.
I was washed by sweet water scented by perfumes. I raised my eyes to see Birbal lying in a swamp filled with dirt and gutter. He was soaked in filth and foul smell.”
The courtiers also joined in the joke and laughed. Birbal humbly stood and said, “What a coincidence your Highness!”. “What are you telling Birbal?”, asked Akbar.

Birbal could not come up with an answer immediately. He remained thoughtful for a few minutes. Akbar felt proud that he had finally asked a question that Birbal found difficult.
The Emperor asked with a grin, “Is the question too difficult for you?” Birbal soon answered confidently, “Your majesty, the difference between true and false is the distance between the eyes and the ears.”
This was a strange answer and it confused the Emperor. Akbar questioned, “How is my question related to eyes and ears? Explain yourself.” “Your majesty, what you see with your eyes is always true. What you hear with your ears is generally false.”
The Emperor was pleased and satisfied with the answer. On returning to the palace, Birbal was showered with costly gifts.
The Strange Question Of Akbar
One of Emperor Akbar’s favorite pastime was to test the wit of his ministers. One fine day, in the court, Akbar announced, “There is a question I want to ask all my courtiers. I will reward the one, who answers it correctly.” The courtiers became very excited and encouraged the king, “What is the question, your majesty?”
The king smiled and asked, “Is there anything that cannot be seen by the sun or the moon?” The courtiers were puzzled. They thought deeply but it was of no use. Time went by and soon it was late in the evening. Yet none of the courtiers could come up with a satisfying answer.
It had become time for the ministers to go home. Akbar was giving the last speech for the day. He said, “I feel upset that none of you could come up with an answer! Hmm… I was planning to give this jewelry set as a reward. It has rare gems in it. Alas! No one is worthy enough to wear it.”
It was then, that Birbal stood up and said, “Your majesty, I have the answer to your question Darkness is something that cannot be seen by the sun or the moon.” “Excellent! That’s exactly the answer I was searching for,” exclaimed the happy Emperor. The Emperor called Birbal and gave him the jewelry set. The courtiers looked on in jealousy.

I would however, like to find out who among you is the cleverest,” said the Emperor. This excited the scholars. “Certainly, your majesty, if that’s your wish,” they said. Akbar used the dipstick of slaked lime to draw a line on the marble floor in front of them. He then declared, “The one who is able to make this line smaller “That’s so easy,” thought the scholars.
The Emperor continued, ”There is one condition. No one is allowed to make any changes to the line that is drawn.” The scholars were at a loss. “How is that possible? To make a line smaller, it would be required to rub off a small portion of it.” They kept on thinking of some other way, but could find none.
Birbal waited to see if anyone could come up with an answer. When no one stepped forward, he spoke up, “Please, give me that dipstick, your majesty. “He took it from the Emperor and drew a bigger line next to the earlier one. The Emperor burst out laughing and said, “You have proved you are the cleverest. Ha ha ha, here is a reward for you.” The Emperor rewarded Birbal, while the scholars hung their heads in shame.
